A life beyond Asperger – from medication to success

Kylie shares her experience as the mother of Jack, now 19, who was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome at six. Facing pressure from his school to medicate him for better behaviour and understanding, Kylie sought alternatives and found Allan, who profiled Jack and provided insights into how to communicate with him effectively. Allan’s profile highlighted Jack’s mechanical learning style and reward motivation, which helped Kylie, his teachers, and his after-school care adapt their communication methods.

As a result, Jack flourished without medication. Contrary to initial concerns from the school and psychologists that Jack would struggle to achieve independence, he moved to Brisbane at 18, works in a nightclub where he is about to become an assistant manager. Jack successfully manages his life, including paying bills, driving, and maintaining a relationship. Kylie attributes Jack’s success to the tailored approach to communication and understanding his unique learning needs, which was supported by everyone involved in his life.
